Zorba the Greek
aka Alexis Zorbas
First screening date unrecorded / Most recently screened in June 2014
Director: Michael Cacoyannis. Cast: Anthony Quinn, Alan Bates, Irene Papas, Lila Kedrova, Eleni Anousaki, George Foundas, Yorgo Voyagis, Sotiris Moustakas, Anna Kyriakou, Takis Emmanuel. Screenplay: Michael Cacoyannis (based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis).

Twitter Capsule: Some virtues can't be written off, especially the sleek photography. But on the whole it's Soulful Ethnic hogwash.

Second Capsule: Photography and occasional performance beats deserve respect but film's sunk by overlength, stale Ethnic™ tropes.

VOR:   Major hit, still often referenced. Lensing, music made their mark. Hamstrung between opening studio films to foreign idioms and reproducing "foreign" stereotypes.
