Yentl
First screened in August 2016
Director: Barbra Streisand. Cast: Barbra Streisand, Mandy Patinkin, Amy Irving, Nehemiah Persoff, Steven Hill, David De Keyser, Ruth Goring, Allan Corduner, Bernard Spear, Miriam Margolyes. Screenplay: Jack Rosenthal and Barbra Streisand (based on the story "Yentl, the Yeshiva Boy" by Isaac Bashevis Singer).

Twitter Capsule: As a visual experience, it ravishes. As story, it's more errant but goes to complicated places. Only as a musical is it flat.

VOR:   Nothing if not ambitious, with the courage of visual, generic, and cultural convictions, even when oddly executed. Exciting to see the movies revive such tenaciously Jewish storytelling.
