Y2K
First screened and reviewed in December 2024
Director: Kyle Mooney. Cast: Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, Rachel Zegler, Lachlan Watson, Daniel Zolghadri, Kyle Mooney, Fred Durst, Mason Gooding, Eduardo Franco, Alicia Silverstone, Tim Heidecker, Maureen Sebastian, The Kid Laroi. Screenplay: Kyle Mooney and Evan Winter.

In Brief: Comedy, stoner hangout, monster flick, teen romance, and nostalgia tour that fails all of these agendas, give or take pot high.

VOR:   Borrows thinly from its inspirations. Contributes meagerly to its inauspicious "traditions." Headed for a shelf-life as short as its title.

Even I know when concise and direct is best: Y2K is very, very easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen in a theater. Everyone connected to it in any way does an irrefutably bad job. (Update: okay, I'll exempt Hunt for the Wilderpeople's Julian Dennison, even if he's riding on comic charisma and not in any way challenged.) A few participants have proved in the past they can do so much better. For example, it is beyond depressing that the madly inconsistent but demonstrably talented Bill Pope shot ...this. Let's wish those folks a speedy recovery. And to those who may have just shown us their best efforts—

Look, between this and V/H/S/99, I've now been jolted out of the notion I need to see any and everything with a 1999 connection. That's what I got from my 91 minutes. That and the vintage flying toaster art in the literal opening seconds. Otherwise, I can't even tell you how often I nearly left. Don't make the same mistakes I did, etc., etc. Grade: F
