Wuthering Heights (1939)
Most recently screened in January 2016
Director: William Wyler. Cast: Laurence Olivier, Merle Oberon, David Niven, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Flora Robson, Hugh Williams, Donald Crisp, Miles Mander, Sarita Wooton, Rex Downing, Douglas Scott, Leo G. Carroll, Cecil Kellaway. Screenplay: Charles MacArthur and Ben Hecht (based on the novel by Emily Brontë).

Twitter Capsule: Toland saves what he can. Still disturbingly flat by Wyler's, Brontë's, or Olivier's standards. Oberon a wash.

VOR:   I concede the key technical advances Toland makes here, even if stylistic finesse feels uneven, as does everything else. Important, but has accrued more "classic" status than it earns.
