A Wrinkle in Time
First screened in March 2018
Director: Ava DuVernay. Cast: Storm Reid, Deric McCabe, Levi Miller, Chris Pine, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Peña, André Holland, Rowan Blanchard, Will McCormack, Yvette Cason, voice of David Oyelowo. Screenplay: Jennifer Lee and Jeff Stockwell (based on the novel by Madeleine L'Engle). Twitter Capsule:
Ambitious, with high peaks, but downplays Ava's gifts for distillation. Fusses most with what should be simplest.
Second Capsule:
Figures of wonder and light seem belabored, including the Mrs's and CGI-heavy paradise. The darkness makes stronger, unsettling impressions.
Third Capsule:
For adults, emotional complexities open near the end. For kids, it's notably complex throughout. Not all of it pans out, but it takes risks.
VOR:③
Might have made more disciplined decisions about set-pieces, visuals, effects, etc., though I appreciate a family movie that's not docile or simple.
