Wonderland (1999)
First screened in September 2005 / Most recently screened in May 2020
Director: Michael Winterbottom. Cast: Gina McKee, Molly Parker, Shirley Henderson, Peter Marfleet, John Simm, Ian Hart, Kika Markham, Jack Shepherd, Stuart Townsend, David Fahm, Ellen Thomas, Enzo Cilenti, Sarah-Jane Potts, Nathan Constance, Anton Saunders, Abby Ford, Michelle Jolly, Rebecca Lenkiewicz. Screenplay: Laurence Coriat.

Twitter Capsule: McKee's tops but everyone, center to edges, is good in Winterbottom's lo-fi, endearing echo of Hannah and Her Sisters.

Second Capsule: This isn't terra incognita, but Coriat's screenplay and Winterbottom's direction brim with empathy and make London a city of so many colors.

Third Capsule: The grubby aesthetic of blown-up Super16 serves the story. Imagine peeling a magazine page off your shoe and discovering it's a love letter.

VOR:   How can Winterbottom be so proficient at so many genres and score a crossover hit in none? Proves grungy streetside cinema and women-driven romantic study can coexist.
