Predictions and Winners Every Oscar show is a combination of pain and pleasure, and just to prove that, the 1999 Awards afforded me my lowest number of correct predictions since I started paying attention a decade ago. At the same time, I'd call this ceremony the warmest and most compelling of the decade. True, many of my favorite films and filmmakers failed to get nominated in their respective categories, and I was ambivalent about several outcomes. That said, I was happy to see my favorite nominees prevail in several categories, and the one candidate I was most strongly behind managed to pull down a well-earned trophythree cheers, Hilary Swank! Besides Swank's Best Actress victory, highlights of the telecast for me included Warren Beatty's eloquent and succinct acceptance of his Irving Thalberg Award; the charming explosions of joy by Foreign Film winner Pedro Almodóvar and his longtime friends and cast members Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, who conferred his statue; Michael Caine's eloquent and heartfelt tributes to his fellow nominees, which hugely classed up his otherwise frustrating win; Kevin Spacey's sincere shout-out to his mom, which played as equally sincere but less florid than Tom Hanks' tributes to his teachers in 1993 and his wife in 1994; and the fact that everyone on stage looked glamorous and, even better, truly happy to be there. Roberto Benigni even kept a lid on The Crazy for the most part. What more is a TV-watcher to ask for? On the left my predictions, on the right the winners. My goofs are in red: a self-flagellating gesture, given how poorly I fared. But there's always next year... |
