We Come As Friends
First screened in September 2015 / Most recently screened in December 2019
Director: Hubert Sauper. Documentary about the referendum by which South Sudan declared itself an independent state in 2011, and the complex of oil prospects, political competitions, infrastructural problems, and abject poverty that threaten its existence.

Twitter Capsule: Like Darwin's Nightmare, disorienting blend of cause-effect journalism and formally-echoed chaos. I get it now.

VOR:   Sauper is a rare talent who can make seeming disorganization pack a punch, and even sell it persuasively as a style. Eye-opening, if purposefully opaque.
