A Spell to Ward Off the Darkness
First screened in September 2013
Directors: Ben Rivers and Ben Russell. Three-part constructed ethnography-cum-installation film surveying three disparate environments near the Arctic circle, loosely bridged by a common character. With Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Marten Kaevats, Iti Kaevats, Merit Kask, Kadri Kontus, Taraka Larson, Nimai Larson, Iko Malikin, Leo Malikin, Polina Malikin, Marko Martinson, Nicholas McMaster, Okeiko, Katri Sipiläinen, Paul Sturtz, Marie Teppart, Tuomo Tuovinen, Nick Turvey, Erko Valk, Weasel Walter.

Twitter Capsule: Vivid, uncanny sounds and images link crunchy, pastoral life cult to amplified death-metal coven.

VOR:   A breed apart from any commercial cinema that's out there. Maybe not as challenging as more rigorously experimental films, but its eerie, slantwise tactics are effectively hypnotic.
