Best new U.S. movie I've seen this year? There's a strong case to be made. Sort of apples to oranges, or maybe cherry bomb to bouncy ball, to compare Roofman to something like One Battle After Another, but the direction is just immaculate at a scene by scene by scene level and across the overall trajectory, which keeps changing shape and tone and even genre, without seeming to sweat. And Roofman is nowhere near as apolitical as it might seem, even if (again) it doesn't raise its rhetorical or stylistic voice nearly as loudly to say what it's saying. Tatum and Dunst are perfectly cast and perfect, period, as is the marvelously deep supporting cast even in smallish roles. Photography and editing are wonderful. I'll have more to say later, but this was a quick sidestep from the film festival I'm attending, just as impressive as anything in competition there. See it in theaters, for crying out loud! Just loved it. Grade:A
