Local beats and long arcs are earnest but rote. Remaking She's So Lovely with teen boy as Sean Penn is an odd bid for growth.

I applaud risk on 1:1 aspect ratio but several scenes suffer from confinement to closeup. Other intriguing conceits feel half-hearted, and core ideas aren't new enough, for Dolan or for anyone.
