Nasty, cynical noir set amid semicomic languor of beachcombing California. Tricky, suggestive. Strained at times.

Doesn't upend noir as fully as McCabe rewrites the Western but comes intriguingly close. Some gratuitous Altman flourishes but it's as trenchant on contemporary LA as on classic genre.
