The Long Goodbye
First screening date unrecorded / Most recently screened in July 2014
Director: Robert Altman. Cast: Elliott Gould, Nina van Pallandt, Sterling Hayden, Mark Rydell, Jim Bouton, Henry Gibson, Jo Ann Brody, David Arkin, Stephen Coit. Screenplay: Leigh Brackett (based on the novel by Raymond Chandler).

Twitter Capsule: Nasty, cynical noir set amid semicomic languor of beachcombing California. Tricky, suggestive. Strained at times.

VOR:   Doesn't upend noir as fully as McCabe rewrites the Western but comes intriguingly close. Some gratuitous Altman flourishes but it's as trenchant on contemporary LA as on classic genre.
