The Last September
First screened in May 2020
Director: Deborah Warner. Cast: Keeley Hawes, David Tennant, Fiona Shaw, Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Jane Birkin, Gary Lydon, Tom Hickey, Lambert Wilson, Richard Roxburgh, Jonathan Slinger, Emily Nagle, Mikel Murfi, Kieran Aherne, Catherine Walsh, Bernie Downes. Screenplay: John Banville (based on the novel by Elizabeth Bowen).

Twitter Capsule: Never yields promised historical insights, but works okay as well-shot, vaguely political sex/love/family melo.

Second Capsule: Lots of offscreen talent here: theater director Deborah Warner, scripter John Banville, d.p. Sławomir Idziak. I wish sum matched such parts!

VOR:   Literary types make great claims for Bowen, and this story fills plate with promising characters and themes. But what's on screen feels pretty familiar.
