The Landlord
First screened in July 2013 / Most recently screened in May 2016
Director: Hal Ashby. Cast: Beau Bridges, Marki Bey, Diana Sands, Pearl Bailey, Lee Grant, Louis Gossett Jr., Mel Stuart, Walter Brooke, Susan Anspach, Robert Klein, Gloria Hendry, Marlene Clark. Screenplay: Bill Gunn (based on the novel by Kristin Hunter).

Twitter Capsule: Rambunctious paean to lefty-minoritarian communal ethos, braided with a stern critique of same. Acting jewels abound.

Second Capsule: Impressive for its politics and its aesthetics, which can barely be disentangled: punchy, rangy, calico, but fierce.

VOR:   Amazing and sadly, crucially rare instance of an American comedy not only taking a racially, culturally, and economically mixed ensemble as its milieu but shaping itself accordingly.
