Winner '34:
First Saw It:
It Happened One Night
Sometime in college, probably the summer of 1998, on home video
Bridesmaids: The Barretts of Wimpole Street, Cleopatra, Flirtation Walk, The Gay Divorcée, Here Comes the Navy, The House of Rothschild, Imitation of Life, One Night of Love, The Thin Man, Viva Villa!, The White Parade
My Vote: It Happened One Night, though I have only seen half of the nominees
Overlooked: The Scarlet Empress, or the ineligible L'Atalante

It Happened One Night
First screened around 1998 / Most recently screened in April 2020
Director: Frank Capra. Cast: Claudette Colbert, Clark Gable, Walter Connolly, Charles C. Wilson, Roscoe Karns, Jameson Thomas, Bess Flowers, Ward Bond, Alan Hale, Arthur Hoyt, Blanche Friderici, Oliver Eckhardt, Harry Todd. Screenplay: Robert Riskin (based on the story "Night Bus" by Samuel Hopkins Adams).

Twitter Capsule: A very funny comedy where characters and feelings have bracing depth. Direction, photography are consummate.

VOR:   "Opposites attract" did not originate here, but boy did this become a canonical version—with, however, rarely-imitated social and emotional ambitions.
