Hanezu
aka Hanezu no tsuki
First screened in August 2014
Director: Naomi Kawase. Cast: Tôta Komizu, Hako Ohshima, Tetsuya Akikawa, Akaji Maro, Norio Nishikawa, Yokio Yoshioka, Taiga Komizu, Miyako Yamaguchi, Kirin Kiki. Screenplay: Naomi Kawase (based on the novel by Masako Bando).

Twitter Capsule: Despite repetitive and self-serious passages, the delicate, mythopoeic approach to a romantic-triangle narrative engaged me.

VOR:   Kawase's the only Japanese female auteur whose films leave the country (and barely). She's also seen as enjoying inordinate Cannes patronage. Lot of baggage on this modest, gossamer film.
