Gaslight (1944)
First screened in August 1999 / Most recently screened in January 2010
Director: George Cukor. Cast: Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer, Joseph Cotten, Angela Lansbury, Dame May Whitty, Barbara Everest, Emil Rameau, Halliwell Hobbes, Tom Stevenson, Edmund Breon, Lawrence Grossmith, Heather Thatcher. Screenplay: John Van Druten, Walter Reisch, and John L. Balderston (based on the play Angel Street by Patrick Hamilton).

Twitter Capsule: I really vacillate. Great premise. Shaky start. Parts are elegant, others dull or fussy. Uneven performances. Punchy end.

VOR:   A cultural touchstone in no time flat. Works an odd intersection among film noir, Du Maurier, and Dr. Jekyll, with operatic influences. Still less interesting than it should be.
