Enough Said
First screened in September 2013 / Most recently screened and reviewed in May 2023
Director: Nicole Holofcener. Cast: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, James Gandolfini, Catherine Keener, Tracey Fairaway, Toni Collette, Ben Falcone, Tavi Gevinson, Eve Hewson, Anjelah Johnson-Reyes, Michaela Watkins, Phillip Brock, Lennie Loftin, Jessica St. Clair, Christopher Nicholas Smith, Amy Landecker. Screenplay: Nicole Holofcener.

Twitter Capsule: After ace debut, Holofcener's follow-ups all have execution problems. Still, rich ideas for starved demos. Gandolfini!

VOR:   Benefits from its credible handle on tentative middle-age romance and on empty-nest, and from rarity of similar stories. A zero set stylistically.

No, I haven't seen any movie in weeks. Yes, I'd seen this one before. Yes, I picked it as preamble to You Hurt My Feelings tomorrow. No, I still don't think there's anything robust to be said for the screenplay here, or for the lensing or framing or cutting or any single technical element, or even for Louis-Dreyfus's spotty and uneven performance. Yes, I wish I felt differently. Yes, I still think Gandolfini is so special in it that he carries the whole film. Yes, I know, Tony Soprano, yadda yadda yadda, but this is the role I think of first when someone says "James Gandolfini." Grade: B–

Golden Globe Nominations:
Best Actress (Musical/Comedy): Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Other Awards:
Boston Society of Film Critics: Best Supporting Actor (Gandolfini); Best Screenplay
