 Competition Films I Have Seen:
Ranked in order of preference

My Palme d'Or
Tilaï (Burkina Faso, dir. Idrissa Ouedraogo) -
Coolly shot tale of adultery manages a casual friskiness and an inexorable sense of tragedy. A deceptively expansive vision.

Ju Dou (China, dir. Zhang Yimou) -

Cyrano de Bergerac (France, dir. Jean-Paul Rappeneau) -

Wild at Heart (USA, dir. David Lynch) -
A strange, discombobulated, boldly colored art-object with only minimal interest in coherence, for better and worse (full review)

 Sidebar Selections I Have Seen:
Ranked in order of preference

To Sleep with Anger (Directors' Fortnight: USA, dir. Charles Burnett) -
Pitch and momentum a bit erratic, but a justly famous, beguilingly weird fable of trouble come home to roost

Metropolitan (Directors' Fortnight: USA, dir. Whit Stillman) -
A highwire act of capturing a hoity-toity, relentlessly self-conscious milieu without getting infected. Delicious.

The Comfort of Strangers (Out of Competition: USA, dir. Paul Schrader) -
Spindly, sexy, atmospheric mystery survives rhythmic lapses and abandonment of sense. Walken, Mirren great.

The Little Mermaid (Out of Competition: USA, dirs. John Musker and Ron Clements) -
Infectious songs, appealing side-kicks, all of which the gal's prepared to toss for lame prince. Great villain.

Longtime Companion (Un Certain Regard: USA, dir. Norman René) -
Full-hearted, well-intended drama about early years of AIDS yields some good performances, but it's a bit airy
