Competition Films I Have Seen:
Ranked in order of preference

My Palme d'Or
Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (Italy, dir. Elio Petri) - Crime thriller sports political resonance, a sheen of satire, and lushly sensuous appeal

MASH (USA, dir. Robert Altman) - Methodic madness, balancing farce and sorrow, even if some anecdotes play better than others. Key step to even better Altman.

Hòa-Bình (France, dir. Raoul Coutard) - No surprise radical lefties balked, but "cute kids in peril" is a short-sell of Coutard's rich humanism and deft montage.

The Strawberry Statement (USA, dir. Stuart Hagmann) - Police-raid finale is a stomach-turning showstopper, but treated too much as one. Build-up mostly a mess.

Sidebar Selections I Have Seen:
Ranked in order of preference

They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (Out of Competition: USA, dir. Sydney Pollack) - Histrionics are a risk but sheer emotional impact, ferocious construction, vivid characters all stun

Tristana (Out of Competition: Spain, dir. Luis Buñuel) - Despite bold edits and camera's seductive finesse, movie's key virtues are novelistic. Even drier passages evince layers.

Woodstock (Out of Competition: USA, dir. Michael Wadleigh) - Compelling synthesis of direct cinema and hippie ethos as 60s pivot into 70s. Still, context lags behind music and myth.
