Competition Films I Have Seen:
Ranked in order of preference

My Palme d'Or
Woman in the Dunes (Japan, dir. Hiroshi Teshigahara) - A masterpiece from any angle: as humid erotic nightmare, as Kafkaesque adventure, as arid post-atomic allegory.

Barren Lives (Brazil, dir. Nelson Pereira Dos Santos) - Somewhere between a harsher, Brazilian Pather Panchali and a sun-scorched Turin Horse. Eloquent even in its monotony.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (France, dir. Jacques Demy) - I find it less emotionally walloping than some do; engineering is bright and tuneful but a little cold.

The Pumpkin Eater (UK, dir. Jack Clayton) - Drama of young mother's depression rich at times, slick at others. Maggie Smith's cameo a standout in great cast.

The Visit (USA, dir. Bernhard Wicki) - Memorably bitter, especially given Bergman's history. Still, play is slightly softened. Camera a bit stiff. Interesting.
