Competition Films I Have Seen:
Ranked in order of preference
My Palme d'Or
Pather Panchali (India, dir. Satyajit Ray) -
As tender a film as has ever been made, sobering, humble, and beautiful in equal measure. Incalculably influential.
Smiles of a Summer Night (Sweden, dir. Ingmar Bergman) -
Bergman's most convincing stab at comedy has a Renoir-style elegance, with shadows and lusts all his own.
The Mystery of Picasso (France, dir. Henri-Georges Clouzot) -
Not a mystery that gets solved, mind you; maybe its opacity is a limit but I found it a virtue. Entrancing.
I'll Cry Tomorrow (USA, dir. Daniel Mann) -
The tempestuous Hayward in best-ever form, with steely Van Fleet her enabling equal. Directed with gusto, too.
