The Birth of a Nation (2016)
First screened in August 2016 / Most recently screened in October 2016
Director: Nate Parker. Cast: Nate Parker, Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King, Colman Domingo, Chiké Okonkwo, Roger Guenveur Smith, Penelope Ann Miller, Gabrielle Union, Aunjanue Ellis, Esther Scott, Dwight Henry, Jackie Earl Haley, Mark Boone Junior, Katie Garfield, Jayson Warner Smith, Jason Stuart, Kai Norris, Chris Greene, Kelvin Harrison, Jr. Screenplay: Nate Parker and Jean McGianna Celestin (based on, but not credited to, the only extant fragments of Nat Turner's testimonies from jail).

Twitter Capsule: Not at all the opus promised at Sundance and gender politics toxic, but builds to admirably bold second hour.

VOR:   Parker's conduct merited the film being spurned as it was, but its chronicle of righteous subaltern violence is rare and rousing.
