Blue Jasmine
First screened in August 2013 / Most recently screened and reviewed in February 2022
Director: Woody Allen. Cast: Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Bobby Cannavale, Alec Baldwin, Andrew Dice Clay, Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbarg, Louis C.K., Alden Ehrenreich, Max Casella, Daniel Jenks, Max Rutherford, Annie McNamara, Shannon Finn, Tammy Blanchard, Joy Carlin, Kathy Tong, Ali Fedotowsky, Emily Hsu. Screenplay: Woody Allen.

Twitter Capsule: Still mediocre Allen, boldface direction eroding the nuances actors spark to in his script. At least it's intriguing.

VOR:   Blanchett's work is sufficiently high-wire, wobbles and all, to recommend a check-in. Attempt at post-Market Crash topicality. Lazy in other ways.

Good movie? Bad movie? Jasmine? Jeanette? Jasmine Ginger San Francisco? From SF with Acrimony? Is it really San Francisco? Is it an imaginary New York-by-the-Bay? Is it an original screenplay? Is it a Streetcar adaptation? Cate being great? Cate with some caveats, solving script problems as best she can? The iffiest of Woody's good movies? The best of his incoherent ones? The only thing I know for sure is that she saw you, Erica!! Grade: B–
