Angels Are Made of Light
First screened in September 2018
Director: James Longley. Documentary offering a cross-section of present-day Kabul through the prism of three young brothers making their different ways through primary school. Twitter Capsule:
Warm, sad, personalizing look at modern Afghanistan. More pathos-driven than I expected, for good reason.
Second Capsule:
As in Iraq in Fragments, Longley works as his own DP and leans heavily on kids' perspectives. Less striking this time, but still quite good.
VOR:③
The further I got from the film, it felt more conventional in form and vague in point of view. Moving and eye-opening, but not a boundary-pusher.
