The Whales of August
First screened in April 2012
Director: Lindsay Anderson. Cast: Lillian Gish, Bette Davis, Vincent Price, Ann Sothern, Harry Carey Jr., Mary Steenburgen, Margaret Ladd, Tisha Sterling, Frank Grimes. Screenplay: David Berry (based on his play).

Twitter Capsule: Gish's treasured, still-agile face can't save this over-lit, under-written wisp. Nobody's line readings work.

Second Capsule: You can't just leave margarine to melt in the sun and call it Golden Pond. Overlit, stale, too quaint by half.

VOR:   Sothern got the Oscar nod, but only worth tracking down as Gish's curtain call. Price well-used, too. Less here for fans of Anderson or Davis. Smells too much like Grandma's attic.
