West of Zanzibar
First screened in November 2014
Director: Tod Browning. Cast: Lon Chaney, Lionel Barrymore, Mary Nolan, Warner Baxter, Jacqueline Gadsden, Tiny Ward, Rose Dione, Kalla Pasha, Curtis Nero. Screenplay: Elliott J. Clawson, Waldemar Young, and Joseph Farnham (based on the play Kongo by Chester De Vonde and Kilbourn Gordon).

Twitter Capsule: Jesus wept, have you seen this? Either gutsy or troubling on disability and race, but never dumb. Richly lensed.

VOR:   Dracula and especially Freaks are so bracing, a lot of people stop there with Browning, but this is a perfect argument for moving on. Did you need proof early films weren't "simple"?
