Stella Dallas (1937)
First screened in October 2006
Director: King Vidor. Cast: Barbara Stanwyck, Anne Shirley, John Boles, Barbara O'Neil, Alan Hale, Tim Holt, George Walcott, Marjorie Main, Ann Shoemaker, Jack Egger, Dickie Jones, Nella Walker, Bruce Satterlee, Jimmy Butler. Screenplay: Sarah Y. Mason and Victor Heerman (based on the novel by Olive Higgins Prouty, previously dramatized by Henry Wagstaff Gribble and Gertrude Purcell).

Twitter Capsule: Like its lead character, can be a tad flat-footed or push too hard. But like its lead actor, it's tender and tough.

VOR:   A key Depression text, and one that seeped into the groundwater, for better or worse, of American maternity and melodramatic convention, possibly even linking them inextricably.
