Sorrell and Son (1927)
First screened in July 2016
Director: Herbert Brenon. Cast: H.B. Warner, Mickey McBan, Nils Asther, Anna Q. Nilsson, Alice Joyce, Norman Trevor, Carmel Myers, Lionel Belmore, Louis Wolheim, Betsy Ann Hisle, Mary Nolan, Paul McAllister. Screenplay: Herbert Brenon and Elizabeth Meehan (based on the novel by Warwick Deeping).

Twitter Capsule: Rare, moving example of father-son weepie. Only gets lachrymose at end. Great lead performance. Well-shot by Howe.

Second Capsule: This Best Director nominee was an early effort by legendary d.p. James Wong Howe and was set-designed by GWTW's William Cameron Menzies.

VOR:   Interesting and valuable for many reasons: early notch in Howe's and Menzies's belts; sentimental take on father-son devotion; subtle messages about money and military service.
