The Mummy (1999)
First screened in February 2020
Director: Stephen Sommers. Cast: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, Arnold Vosloo, John Hannah, Oded Fehr, Kevin J. O'Connor, Jonathan Hyde, Erick Avari, Patricia Velasquez, Aharon Ipalé, Stephen Dunham, Corey Johnson, Tuc Watkins, Bernard Fox, Omid Djalili, Mohammed Afifi, Carl Chase. Screenplay: Stephen Sommers, Lloyd Fonvielle, and Kevin Jarre (based on the 1932 film directed by Karl Freund and written by John L. Balderston, the same way Boris Karloff's neck plugs are "based" on the writings of Mary Shelley).

Twitter Capsule: For decades I'd written this off as a block of stale cheese but it's staged, edited, and acted with ripe, amiable verve.

VOR:   As fun as this movie is, Value, Originality, and Risk are not its hallmarks. Still, I'd be thrilled if modern blockbusters were this plummy and well-assembled.
