Late Night (2019)
First screened in June 2019
Director: Nisha Ganatra. Cast: Mindy Kaling, Emma Thompson, Reid Scott, Denis O'Hare, Max Casella, Hugh Dancy, John Lithgow, Paul Walter Hauser, John Early, Jia Patel, Amy Ryan, Marc Kudisch, Ike Barinholtz, Luke Slattery, Annaleigh Ashford, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Blake DeLong. Screenplay: Mindy Kaling.

Twitter Capsule: Ripe premise. Emma should be perfect. But ironically, this script needed a tougher writers' room. Very limp direction.

Second Capsule: Two huge problems: the film's idea of nervy humor is as tepid as what it satirizes, and its rebuttal of tokenism itself looks like tokenism.

VOR:   The issues the movie wants to address bear exploration, but it backs down on its nerviest ambitions and ladles on gratuitous distractions.
