First screened in October 2019
Director: Taikia Waititi. Cast: Roman Griffin Davis, Thomas McKenzie, Scarlett Johansson, Taika Waititi, Sam Rockwell, Archie Yates, Rebel Wilson, Alfie Allen, Stephen Merchant, Luke Brandon Field, Sam Haygarth. Screenplay: Taika Waititi (based on the novel Caging Skies by Christine Leunens). Twitter Capsule:
I grant Waititi's comic verve as...Hitler. But what does the rest of the film have? Story, characters confused and flat.
I was perplexed by this film throughout, including its look and performances. By the final third, every seam left in this garment rips open.
The uneven and imprecise satire of the first third gives way to something even vaguer and soppier. Risky even to stage this, but also rather foolish?
