Dodsworth
First screened in September 2006 / Most recently screened in July 2015
Director: William Wyler. Cast: Walter Huston, Ruth Chatterton, Mary Astor, Gregory Gaye, David Niven, Paul Lukas, Kathryn Marlowe, John Payne, Maria Ouspenskaya, Harlan Briggs, Spring Byington, Odette Myrtil, Beatrice Maude, Inez Palange. Screenplay: Sidney Howard (based on his play, itself based on the novel by Sinclair Lewis).

Twitter Capsule: Among the most emotionally rich of 30s Hollywood dramas. Despite some principled value judgments, every role is complex.

VOR:   Wyler's 1930s films are always visually rewarding, but the bigger stories here are the marvelous performances, economical but layered storytelling, and still-modern sensibility.
