Competition Films I Have Seen:
Ranked in order of preference

My Palme d'Or
An American in Paris (USA, dir. Vincente Minnelli) - Light and aimless compared to upcoming Freed musicals, but these are virtues as well as demerits. Enjoyable.

Othello (USA/Morocco, dir. Orson Welles) - Striking, adventurous shots but destructively fast-paced edits, with no tragic accumulation and too few character insights.

Viva Zapata! (USA, dir. Elia Kazan) - Preposterous feints at "Mexican" idiom but powerful lensing, earnest political impetus. Brando, cast find truth in it.

Umberto D. (Italy, dir. Vittorio De Sica) - Historical importance, social value easy to admire but film leans much harder than Bicycle Thieves on maudlin sentiment.

Detective Story (USA, dir. William Wyler) - Episodic drama barely makes a case for its own plot. Decent, but only a few actors elevate it, Bendix especially.
